WAEC Launches Resit Exams for Students

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a groundbreaking initiative, enabling candidates to resit their WASSCE papers much earlier than before. Known as WASSCE PC1, this program allows students to retake their exams between January and February 2025, offering a quicker path to improve their grades.

This announcement marks a significant departure from the traditional system, where students had to wait until the next private exam cycle to retake failed papers. The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, revealed the details during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show in Ghana on December 31.

According to Mr. Kapi, students who wish to participate in the program must register online by January 8, 2025. Registration can be completed via the WAEC website or at accredited internet cafés. The exams will be conducted from January 24 to February 15, 2025.

“To assist candidates in their preparations, WAEC will fast-track the release of chief examiners’ reports,” Kapi explained. “These reports provide valuable insights into areas where students commonly make mistakes and offer guidance on how to better approach their studies and exams.”

The program is open to students whose results were canceled, provided they are not serving bans for examination malpractice. Exams will initially be held in regional capitals due to the limited number of candidates.

To ensure awareness, WAEC has promoted the initiative widely through its website, banners, and the results-checking platform. “This is a chance for students and parents to seize an opportunity to avoid delays in academic progression,” Kapi emphasized.

WAEC is optimistic that this initiative will benefit students who need to improve their grades, helping them meet admission requirements for the next academic cycle without the usual year-long wait.
