Nigerian singer and internet personality, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been released on bail after spending five days in police custody. His release followed his arrest in Lagos, which occurred last Friday. He was subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he remained in detention until Tuesday.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed the details, stating that Darlington’s arrest was initiated after a formal complaint by Nigerian music icon Burna Boy. The complaint accused Darlington of defamation and cyberstalking, alleging that his actions had tarnished Burna Boy’s reputation.
According to Adeyanju, Speed Darlington was freed after meeting the conditions for bail set by the police in Abuja. The lawyer expressed his gratitude in a post on social media platform X, thanking all those who helped secure Darlington’s release. He also praised the professionalism of the police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), who handled the case.
In a viral video that surfaced shortly after his release, Darlington mocked Burna Boy, questioning the legitimacy of his Grammy win for the album Twice As Tall. He also made remarks about Burna Boy’s connection to American rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who has been embroiled in legal issues related to sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
In a related development, Darlington’s mother made an emotional plea in a video shared online, urging Burna Boy to show compassion and “tamper justice with mercy” for her only son. This appeal reportedly played a significant role in drawing attention to Darlington’s case.
