Sokoto Bombing: Military Criticizes Villagers Amid Calls for Investigation

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has issued a strong warning to civilians against sheltering criminals, stressing that such actions could have severe consequences. This statement followed the tragic accidental bombing of two communities in Sokoto State on Christmas Day, which claimed at least 10 lives and left several others injured.

Airstrike Misfire and its Aftermath

The Nigerian Air Force, aiming to neutralize Lakurawa terrorists in the Silame Local Government Area, mistakenly struck the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with prominent figures, including Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal, demanding an impartial investigation into the tragedy.

Governor Aliyu described the event as a heartbreaking and avoidable loss of life. Visiting the affected communities, he announced ₦20 million and 100 bags of food items as support for the grieving families. “The state government will work with the Nigerian Army to ensure a full investigation and prevent such incidents in the future,” Aliyu assured.

General Musa placed partial blame on the villagers for allegedly harbouring terrorists, stating that communities providing sanctuary to criminals expose themselves to risks during military operations. “Do not harbour criminals or associate with them. Doing so makes you a legitimate target,” he warned.

The CDS acknowledged the need for accountability, promising a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized that the military is determined to maintain peace and security while minimizing unintended consequences during operations.

During his visit to the troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA, General Musa commended their dedication and sacrifice. He highlighted recent successes against Lakurawa terrorists in Sokoto and Kebbi States, underscoring the Armed Forces’ commitment to addressing security threats nationwide.

Musa also called for enhanced regional collaboration with neighboring countries like Niger, Chad, and Benin to tackle cross-border security challenges. “We will sustain our operational tempo to ensure peace and stability across Nigeria,” he pledged.

The airstrike has sparked outrage, with Atiku Abubakar condemning it as a gross violation of humanity. “While targeting terrorists is essential, these operations must be executed with precision and based on irrefutable intelligence to avoid harming innocent civilians,” he stated.

Similarly, former Governor Tambuwal expressed shock, labeling the incident a tragic mistake that inflicted unnecessary suffering on innocent citizens. He urged the military to adopt greater caution and accountability in their operations.

Tambuwal and other leaders have called for a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to ensure justice for the victims and their families. “The loss of civilian lives during operations meant to protect them is unacceptable. Measures must be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Tambuwal asserted.

As investigations continue, there is a collective call for better intelligence and precision in military operations to avoid similar mistakes. National leaders emphasized the importance of prioritizing civilian safety while combating threats from terrorist groups like the Lakurawa.
