Rwanda Stuns Super Eagles with 2-1 Comeback in Final AFCON Qualifier
In a surprising turn of events, Rwanda overcame Nigeria’s Super Eagles with a thrilling 2-1 victory during the final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Monday. The match, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, showcased Rwanda’s determination as they clawed back from a goal down to secure an unforgettable win.
A Game of Two Halves
The first half ended without goals, as both teams struggled to convert opportunities. Nigeria’s Super Eagles, buoyed by the home crowd, displayed early dominance but failed to break through Rwanda’s resolute defense.
The second half, however, brought drama and excitement. Nigeria finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Samuel Chukwueze found the back of the net, sending the fans into raptures. But the lead was short-lived as Rwanda’s Aimable Mutinzi equalized in the 72nd minute, reigniting hopes for the visitors.
Just three minutes later, Imanishimwe Nshuti capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the decisive goal, completing Rwanda’s comeback. Although he was later booked for time-wasting, Nshuti emerged as the hero of the night.
A Shocking Outcome but Little Consequence for Nigeria
Despite the loss, Nigeria had already secured their place in AFCON 2025 in Morocco, finishing top of Group D with 11 points. Their record included three wins, two draws, and just this single defeat.
Rwanda’s win, though impressive, wasn’t enough to earn them a spot in the tournament. Both Rwanda and Benin finished with 8 points, but Benin edged out Rwanda on goal difference to claim the group’s second qualifying spot. Meanwhile, Libya rounded out the group at the bottom with 5 points.
A Memorable Upset
For Rwanda, this victory was a statement of resilience and determination. Against a strong Nigerian side, they proved that underdogs can rise to the occasion, delivering one of the most unexpected results of the qualifiers.
Though the Super Eagles left the pitch disappointed, their focus will now shift to preparations for the main tournament in Morocco, where they hope to redeem themselves and pursue continental glory.
