Okowa Responds to Alleged N1.3 Trillion Fraud, Blames Political Adversaries

Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has dismissed allegations of financial mismanagement amounting to N1.3 trillion during his tenure, describing them as politically motivated and baseless. Okowa, who served as a two-term governor and was the vice-presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, made these remarks during a visit from the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council at his residence in Asaba on Thursday.

Allegations and EFCC Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently investigating Okowa over accusations of diverting N1.3 trillion in state funds. Addressing the traditional rulers, led by Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd.), the Orodje of Okpe, Okowa categorically denied the allegations and described them as “malicious lies” designed to tarnish his reputation.

“In politics, one must be prepared for baseless accusations, but it’s disheartening when outright fabrications are presented as facts,” Okowa said. He emphasized that the claims were not only unreasonable but also a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

Breaking Down the Accusations

Okowa challenged the logic behind the allegations, explaining that for such a sum to have been misappropriated, it would require siphoning between N16 billion and N20 billion monthly over his eight-year tenure. “This isn’t just impractical; it’s an unintelligent fabrication aimed at distorting facts for personal gain,” he stated.

Commitment to Transparency

Unlike others who seek court orders to block investigations, Okowa said he welcomed the EFCC’s probe and pledged full cooperation with the agency. “I am not afraid of any investigation. I’ve answered all the EFCC’s questions confidently and transparently. The public deserves the truth, not politically motivated fabrications,” he declared.

Okowa asserted that the discrepancies between the petition’s claims and actual facts would be evident to investigators. “I know those behind these allegations, but they cannot deter me. I served Delta State with integrity, supported by our people and leaders like you. Together, we achieved significant progress,” he told the visiting council.

Traditional Rulers Show Support

The Delta State Traditional Rulers Council expressed solidarity with Okowa, commending his leadership and contributions to the state during his tenure. They assured him of their unwavering support and confidence in his ability to clear his name.

“You have always maintained a cordial relationship with us, and we trust that justice will prevail. We stand by you in this trying time,” said Maj.-Gen. Mujakperuo on behalf of the council.

Political Undercurrents

Okowa concluded by attributing the allegations to political adversaries seeking to discredit his legacy and weaken his standing within the PDP. “These attacks are purely political. I remain undeterred and committed to serving the people with the same integrity and dedication,” he said.

The ongoing EFCC investigation will likely shed more light on the allegations, but Okowa’s confidence and the support of his community suggest he is prepared to face the challenge head-on.
