Senator Ndume Defends Northern Nigeria’s Economic Independence, Calls for Tax Reforms
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has firmly dismissed claims that Northern Nigeria is economically dependent on other regions, describing the North as an asset to the country rather than a liability.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ndume emphasized that no region in Nigeria can thrive independently, highlighting the importance of interdependence among states and regions for the nation’s collective survival. His remarks came in response to criticisms suggesting that the North cannot sustain itself economically and that northerners are generally averse to paying taxes.
Northern Nigeria: An Asset, Not a Liability
“The North will never be a parasite or dependent on any region or even the country,” Ndume stated. “We are assets, not liabilities, to Nigeria.” He reiterated that the region contributes significantly to the country’s overall economic and social framework.
While countering the narrative of Northern dependence, the senator pointed out that such misconceptions stem from a lack of understanding about the region’s contributions and potential. He added that these unfounded claims often undermine the unity and progress of Nigeria as a whole.
Interdependence: The Key to National Growth
Ndume stressed that while every region has its unique strengths, no part of Nigeria can afford to exist in isolation. “All states and regions in the country need one another to survive no matter how rich they may seem,” he said. He urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of collaboration and mutual support rather than fostering divisions based on regional stereotypes.
Tax Reforms and the North
Addressing the ongoing debates on tax reforms, Ndume dismissed the notion that these reforms disproportionately target Northern interests. “Those who think that the current tax reforms are only against Northern interest are naive. As it is, the law affects all low- and middle-income Nigerians,” he asserted.
He advised the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to focus on broadening the tax base and improving collection efficiency. “The FIRS should concentrate on expanding the tax net and collecting more revenue,” he said, adding that reforms should not be skewed against any specific region or income group.
Call for Accountability and Transparency
Ndume also emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in the tax system. He called on the FIRS and other relevant agencies to ensure that taxpayers’ money is utilized effectively and that citizens can see the tangible benefits of their contributions.
“Accountability and transparency should be increased,” the senator said, urging government institutions to gain the trust of Nigerians by showing results in how taxes are managed and used for national development.
Ndume’s statement is a call for a more unified and equitable approach to governance, where all regions of Nigeria are seen as valuable contributors to the nation’s growth. He urged Nigerians to look beyond regional biases and work collectively to address the economic challenges facing the country.
