Ibadan Stampede: Justice Will Prevail, Says Governor Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has pledged that those responsible for the tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children, will be brought to justice. The governor assured that no one, regardless of their social or political status, will be above the law in the state.

Makinde made this commitment during the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers, where he reiterated his administration’s dedication to upholding justice and the rule of law.

Accountability for the Tragedy

The unfortunate incident occurred at the Islamic High School in Basharun, Ibadan, and has led to the arrest and detention of three individuals: Oriyomi Hamzat, founder of Agidigbo FM; Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the principal sponsor of the event; and Mr. Abdullah Fasasi, Principal of the Islamic High School, which hosted the funfair.

On December 24, the suspects were arraigned in a magistrates’ court in Ibadan. Following a review of their case, the magistrate ordered their remand at the Agodi Custodial Centre, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Makinde Rejects Comparisons to Other Incidents

Governor Makinde addressed criticisms from those comparing the handling of the Ibadan tragedy to similar events in other parts of the country, such as Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where no one was held accountable. He made it clear that Oyo State will not condone impunity.

“In Oyo State, justice must prevail,” Makinde said. “Some people have reached out, asking why those responsible are being prosecuted when similar incidents in Anambra and FCT resulted in no trials. My response is simple: Oyo State is not Anambra or the FCT. Here, we uphold the rule of law, and justice will be served.”

A Year Marked by Challenges

Reflecting on the past year, Makinde acknowledged the challenges the state faced, including a tragic explosion in Bodija on January 16, 2024, which affected several areas, including his own office. Despite these difficulties, he reaffirmed his commitment to resolving crises and preventing future tragedies.

Speaking about the stampede, Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. “We lost 35 children in the stampede. May we never experience such a tragedy again in Oyo State,” he said.

Justice Will Be Served

The governor emphasized that the judiciary has the autonomy to handle the case and that he has no objections if the suspects are granted bail pending trial. However, he insisted that the accused must face trial to ensure accountability.

“The judiciary is here to ensure justice. If bail is granted, so be it. But let it be clear: there will be a trial. Justice must be done,” Makinde stated.
