How to Make Crispy Nigerian Chin-Chin

 

Chin-chinis a beloved Nigerian snack known for its crispy texture and sweet, savory flavor. Here’s a simple recipe to make this delicious treat at home.

 

Ingredients:

 

– 2 cups all-purpose flour

– 1/2 cup sugar

– 1 teaspoon baking powder

– 1/2 teaspoonsalt

– 1/2 cup butter, softened

– 1/4 cup milk

– Vegetable oil for frying

 

Instructions:

 

1. Combine Dry Ingredients:In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

 

2. Add Butter: Cut the softened butter into small pieces and add it to the dry ingredients. Use your hands to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

 

3. Create Dough:Gradually add the milk to the mixture, mixing until a dough forms. Be careful, do not add too much milk.

 

4. Roll and Cut:Knead the dough briefly on a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use a knife to cut the dough into long strips.

 

5. Fry: Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to about 350°F (175°C). Fry the chin-chin strips in batches until they are golden brown and crispy.

 

6. Drain: Remove the fried chin-chin with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels.

 

7. Cool and Serve:Let the chin-chin cool completely before serving.

– For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to the dry ingredients.

– If the dough is too dry, add a little more milk till it soften.

– To achieve extra crispiness, allow the chin-chin to cool completely before storing.
