Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Regains Freedom

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, was released from the Kuje Custodial Centre on Friday after meeting the bail conditions set by the Federal High Court. His release marked a critical development in the ongoing legal proceedings against him.

Confirmation of Release

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, Adamu Duza, confirmed the release to reporters. Duza stated:
“Yahaya Bello has been released after meeting bail conditions. He was released this evening. The Controller of NCoS FCT, Ajibogun Olatubosun, was present to ensure a smooth process, with all protocols observed.”

Bail Conditions

Bello’s bail was granted on Thursday by Justice MaryAnne Anenih of the Federal High Court. The terms of the bail included the following:
1. N500 million bond as the bail sum.
2. Provision of three sureties, each owning property in high-value areas of Abuja, such as Maitama, Guzape, or Asokoro.
3. Submission of his **international passport**, ensuring he cannot leave Nigeria without prior court approval.

The court emphasized these conditions to ensure compliance and mitigate flight risks.

Charges Against Yahaya Bello

Bello, alongside co-defendants Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu, faces a 16-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges include:
– Conspiracy
– Criminal breach of trust
– Unlawful possession of property

All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The EFCC accuses them of engaging in financial misconduct during Bello’s tenure as governor, but the trial is still in its preliminary stages.

With his release on bail, Yahaya Bello is expected to prepare for his defense as the legal process unfolds. His freedom, however, comes with stringent restrictions, particularly the prohibition of international travel without express permission from the court.
