Catholic Priest Arrested for Allegedly Shooting Firework Thrower to Death in Imo State
The Imo State Police Command has apprehended Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya, a Catholic priest from St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area, for allegedly shooting and killing a young boy during a New Year’s Eve church service.
The victim, identified as Joseph, was reportedly throwing fireworks, locally referred to as “knockouts” or “bangers,” inside the church premises despite repeated warnings from the priest. Witness accounts indicate that the incident occurred during the crossover night service, a gathering to usher in the New Year.
Events Leading to the Tragedy
According to eyewitnesses, Rev. Fr. Enyinnaya had cautioned a group of boys against throwing fireworks within the church compound. However, one of the boys ignored the warning and threw a firework into the premises. Frustrated by the continued disobedience, the priest retrieved a firearm and fired a warning shot into the air. Tragically, the boy was struck when the gun discharged accidentally as the priest lowered his weapon.
A local resident who witnessed the incident provided further context, stating, “The priest initially fired a warning shot to scare the boys away. Unfortunately, when he lowered the gun, a second round from the double-barreled firearm discharged accidentally, hitting the boy.”
Other individuals nearby reportedly sustained injuries as a result of the shooting.
Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed the priest’s arrest and disclosed that an investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. “A thorough investigation is underway to determine the facts of the case. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” Okoye stated.
The incident has left the local community in shock, with many expressing concern over the tragic outcome of what should have been a celebratory occasion. While some believe the priest acted out of frustration, others emphasize the need for restraint in handling such situations.
As the investigation continues, the case raises questions about the use of firearms by private individuals and the measures that should be in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
