Super Eagles and Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman, has been named the 2024 African Player of the Year, solidifying his place among the continent’s football elite.

The prestigious award was announced at the CAF Awards ceremony held on Monday in Marrakech, Morocco. Lookman emerged victorious after an impressive year, edging out strong contenders, including Brighton’s Simon Adingra, Dortmund’s prolific striker Serhou Guirassy, and Paris Saint-Germain’s standout defender Achraf Hakimi.

Lookman’s stellar performances throughout the year positioned him as the clear favorite. He played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s triumph in the Europa League and was instrumental in Nigeria’s impressive run to the AFCON 2024 final. His consistency and impact on the pitch ultimately earned him the coveted award.

There had been earlier speculation that Achraf Hakimi might claim the title, following his achievements of winning a league and cup double with PSG and helping Morocco secure a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games. However, Lookman’s standout contributions on both club and international levels saw him outshine his rivals.

In his acceptance speech, Ademola Lookman expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. “I give thanks to God for this incredible honor,” he said, while also acknowledging the unwavering support of President Bola Tinubu, his teammates, and everyone who has stood by him throughout his career.

Lookman dedicated the award to Nigeria and his family, highlighting their vital role in his success. Encouraging aspiring players, he offered inspiring words: *“Do not let your failures weigh you down. Turn your pains into wings and continue to fly.”

The 2024 CAF Player of the Year award marks a defining moment in Lookman’s career, celebrating his exceptional talent and hard work that has brought pride to both his country and club.
