One Dead, Three Injured in Ebonyi State as Police and Soldier Clash
Ebonyi State – Tragedy struck in Ugwuachara, Abakaliki, when a clash between a soldier and police officers led to the death of a bystander and left three others injured.
The incident, which occurred on the morning of Wednesday, November 20, reportedly began when policemen allegedly attempted to disarm a soldier dressed in mufti. In the ensuing struggle, a stray bullet fatally struck a labourer, while three others sustained injuries.
According to reports, the soldier involved is part of Operation Kachayanma in Katsina but was on a pass in Ebonyi State at the time.
Adaku Uche-Anya, the state commissioner of police, confirmed the incident in a statement to The Sun. She clarified:
“The soldier was attempting to disarm one of the policemen when the bullet discharged, hitting a bystander. This was not a case of the policemen opening fire on bystanders. One person tragically lost their life, while three others are receiving treatment and responding well in the hospital.”
Uche-Anya added that the soldier, stationed in Kaduna, has been identified, and both he and the policemen involved are now in custody as investigations continue.
