Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina Shines as First Runner-Up at Miss Universe 2024

Chidimma Adetshina of Nigeria has made her mark on the global stage by securing the first runner-up position at the 73rd Miss Universe Competition, held in Mexico City. The grand event, hosted early Sunday morning at the Arena CDMX, showcased the poise, talent, and intelligence of women from around the world.

The competition culminated in a dramatic finale as Adetshina and Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig stood side by side, awaiting the announcement of the winner. In a heart-stopping moment, Theilvig was crowned Miss Universe 2024, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, who held the title in 2023.

Miss Universe’s organizers described the intense finale in an Instagram post:
> “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.”

Though Adetshina narrowly missed the crown, her stellar performance earned widespread admiration from judges and audiences alike. Her grace, charisma, and elegance left an indelible impression, solidifying her position as one of the competition’s standout participants.

A Journey of Resilience and Determination

Adetshina’s path to the Miss Universe stage was not without hurdles. Earlier this year, she faced controversy after withdrawing from the Miss South Africa 2024 contest, despite advancing to the final stage. The decision came amid debates questioning her eligibility due to her Nigerian nationality.

Undeterred by the setback, Adetshina focused on representing Taraba State in the national competition, where she claimed the Miss Universe Nigeria title. This victory paved her way to the global arena, where she represented her country with pride and distinction.

Echoes of Historic Nigerian Achievements

Adetshina’s success recalls Nigeria’s rich history of pageant excellence. Her achievement is reminiscent of Agbani Darego’s historic victory in 2001, when she became the first Black African woman to win the Miss World crown at just 18 years old.

While the Miss Universe crown eluded her, Chidimma Adetshina’s accomplishments have cemented her status as a symbol of resilience and grace, inspiring a new generation of Nigerians to aim for greatness on the global stage.
