Military Lays Lagbaja to Rest Today

Preparations have been finalized for the burial of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away last week following a prolonged illness. His final resting place will be the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

The late army chief’s body arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday at approximately 12:18 p.m. A series of funeral rites began the same day, starting with a Service of Songs held at Mogadishu Cantonment. The event was attended by the leadership of all security agencies, reflecting the deep respect he commanded.

During the service, Maj.-Gen. Kelvin Aligbe, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command, spoke on behalf of the 39 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He praised Lagbaja as an extraordinary military leader and a natural-born commander whose life exemplified service and dedication.

“From the beginning, Lagbaja stood out as a leader,” Aligbe said. “The best way to honor his memory is to uphold the values he championed—service, dedication, and the indivisibility of Nigeria. He gave everything for this country, but I wonder if we gave him enough in return.”

Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, Bilikisu Ibrahim highlighted Lagbaja’s unwavering faith and strength of character. She described him as a pillar of protection for those he served and a man deeply rooted in spirituality.

“To the soldiers, he was a beacon of stability amidst chaos. But beyond his military duties, he was a man of faith who relied on prayers to navigate the darkest battles. His devotion gave him the strength to persevere,” she said.

Lagbaja’s burial today marks the conclusion of a life dedicated to service, leadership, and the defense of Nigeria’s sovereignty. His legacy as a soldier and a man of principle will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
