Obaseki: “I’m Not Afraid of EFCC Probe”

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has expressed readiness to face a possible arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after his tenure ends next week, stating that he has nothing to hide and is unfazed by the prospect of investigation.

Speaking in Abuja during the EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session, Obaseki addressed the rumors, dismissing them as part of a campaign of “silly petitions” motivated by “cruel and wicked” individuals with a vendetta against him.

He remarked, “I hear that the EFCC will pick me next week after my tenure. Wherever they keep me, I’ll use the time to do research.”

Reflecting on his achievements, Obaseki, who has served as Edo State governor since 2016, highlighted his commitment to leaving a legacy for the people of Edo. “There are many things we have done that can be described as legacy projects. I believe in Edo State,” he said, adding that his administration has focused on meaningful reforms that will have lasting impacts on the state and its citizens.

Obaseki criticized his opponents, calling out what he described as their bitterness, envy, and attempts to undermine his accomplishments. He stated, “Why should I be afraid? I focused on what I believe in, and today, the results are clear. Let them continue their political witch hunt—it’s their problem, not mine.”

He continued, “People have written all sorts of baseless petitions against me. This country can be driven by bitterness, jealousy, and vendetta. But I have nothing to hide and would willingly hand myself over if called.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Obaseki emphasized his dedication to serving the people of Edo State. “Our focus has been on the welfare of the people and reforming the civil service. We must prioritize people over vendettas. The suffering in the country is too great, and we have a duty to use our privilege to make a difference,” he urged.

As his time in office nears an end, Obaseki remains committed to his work, underscoring that his administration’s focus on bureaucracy reform and attention to civil servants’ needs are key aspects of his legacy. The governor reaffirmed his hope that future leaders will continue to prioritize the people over personal grievances.
