The Nigeria Police Force has deployed officers to key areas across states as organizers of the October 1 protest insist on proceeding with their Independence Day demonstration, according to The PUNCH.
The #FearlessOctober1 protest follows the #Endbadgovernance demonstration from August 1 to 10. Organizers argue the protest is necessary due to the Federal Government’s failure to address hunger, rising costs, insecurity, inefficiency, electoral reforms, and human capital development.
In Lagos, the protest will start at 7:30 a.m. at Ikeja Under Bridge, while in Abuja, it will take place at Eagle Square, coinciding with the official Independence Day parade. Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore confirmed they are “fully prepared” to begin at 7 a.m. on October 1.
State police commands have increased security to prevent disruptions. In Niger State, police deployed personnel and security assets in key areas, particularly in Minna and Suleja, where tensions rose during the #Endbadgovernance protest. The police command also consulted local leaders to maintain peace.
In Ogun, Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu announced that officers would be deployed to vulnerable areas on Monday to prevent unrest. Bayelsa’s police command assured security for protesters while maintaining peace during and after the demonstration.
In Kaduna, Kano, and Kogi states, police have taken steps to prevent violence. In Kogi, Commissioner of Police Bethrand Onuoha urged organizers to reconsider and give the government more time to address economic challenges. The Edo State Police Command will maintain the security measures from the recent governorship election to ensure a peaceful Independence Day.
The October 1 protest kicks off tomorrow all over the nation.
