FG increases NYSC minimum wage

Corps members to receive new minimum wage.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has raised the monthly stipend for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024. This increase aligns with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024, marking a significant improvement in the financial support provided NYSC members.

The official announcement came via a press release on the NYSC’s X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday night. It confirmed that the increase was approved by the Federal Government and documented in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, on September 25, 2024.

The statement reads: “The Federal Government has approved the increase of Corps Members’ monthly allowance to Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira (N77,000) with effect from July 2024, in accordance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.”

Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, stated that this move is intended to offer financial relief to corps members and encourage them to contribute more effectively to national service.

The push for this increment followed a request made by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, during his visit to the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, where he called for a stronger welfare package for corps members.

Brigadier General Ahmed expressed his gratitude to the government for this timely increase, emphasizing that the new allowance will not only provide much-needed financial relief to corps members but will also uplift their morale and inspire greater dedication to their service.

Previously, corps members received a monthly allowance of N33,000. The recent adjustment is seen as a crucial step toward improving the welfare of the nation’s youth during their service year.
